Dans les années 70 de grands courants se dégagent clairement, tout en étant classés "rock" : le hard rock, le rock progressif, le rock fusion. La fin des années 1970 voit l’essor des musiques électroniques, mais aussi le renouveau du rock américain, jusqu’alors dominé par le rock britannique, laminé à son tour par la vague punk, qui met fin aux dinosaures britanniques (Led Zep, Deep Purple…).
